Lactose Intolerance

Last week at E's one-year appointment, her doctor confirmed what S and I have suspected for a few weeks now -- that our little lady is lactose-intolerant.  I'll spare you the disgusting mucousy poopy diapers details, but suffice it to say she has every textbook symptom each time she consumes dairy.
 
We first noticed when she had yogurt the week before her birthday.  She was really fussy and gassy and had a terrible diaper afterwards.  We already thought she might have issues with dairy, because she also could not tolerate lactose as a newborn (I had to cut all dairy from my diet until she "outgrew" it around 4-5 months old), but we wanted to test her a few more times to be sure it wasn't a fluke.  She then had homemade buttercream frosting (pure butter + sugar) twice the week of her birthday, and cottage cheese a few times after that, and was fussy and had all of the other symptoms every single time.  So far, it seems only straight dairy upsets her stomach; dairy ingredients baked into something else (i.e. in cake or bread) don't seem to bother her too much, thankfully.  Her doctor suggested starting her on soy milk instead of whole cow's milk (we hadn't tried cow's milk yet, for this reason), and then every few weeks offer her a small amount of dairy to see if she develops a tolerance for it.  If not, she will be officially tested at 18 months, and we can go from there. 

I am happy to report that so far, she seems to be doing great on the soy milk.  We started her on it last week, and so far she seems to really like it and has drank (drunk?) it without complaint.  However, I feel like I am kind of hitting a wall in choosing foods to give to her, especially for breakfast.  I try to make sure she gets multiple servings of fruit/vegetables, a protein, and a grain every day (and at least two of the three at each meal), but I am stumped as to what to feed her in the morning.  She can't eat oatmeal (it makes her vomit), and obviously can't have yogurt.  So far I've just been giving her dry cereal, fruit, or eggs, which I'm sure is going to get boring quick.

Any suggestions for lactose-free breakfast ideas?

  1. Henry is allergic to dairy, and has been since birth. Breakfast are a lot of fruit, oatmeal and other breakfast cereals, waffles and pancakes, peanut butter toast, muffins, and Hen's favorite eggs. There are great alternative yogurt son the market made from almond, soy and coconut milk. Henry loves all of those. There are also alternative cheese that Hen likes, but I think cause he's never had real cheese. If you ever have questions, let me know!

    Also, totally unsolicited advice. You may want to check into using other alternative milks. Soy has estrogen like hormones in it naturally that have been linked with higher rates of breast cancer and early puberty, there is also soe evidence that it actually makes it more difficult for little bodies to get nutrients from food.

    1. You may want to consider almond milk or coconut milk as another alternative. (Or ignore me since I'm just a crazy Internet person, and your doc told you soy!)

      I had actually read that about soy back when I was using it instead of dairy back when E was a newborn. I did ask her doctor about almond or rice milk instead of soy, but he said the amount she would be consuming wouldn't be a concern, especially since she is female. He also was concerned she wouldn't get enough fats/calories from almond or rice milk. However, the calories wouldn't be an issue with coconut milk, so I might ask him about that as an alternative. (Or, just talk to S about it and decide to do it anyway, ha!)

    3. Just know that coconut milk doesn't have protein it. So for Henry we mx coconut with Almond milk. So he gets protein, and the good fats. My doc is very happy with this system.

    4. That is a great idea! I talked to S about it and he agrees we should try adding coconut and almond milk to the mix so that E isn't getting only soy all of the time. Thanks so much for your help, I'm sure I will have more questions for you in the future! ;-)

  2. Henry used to get some hives with regular milk when he was younger, so we got pretty familiar with soy yogurt (definitely recommend these! Easy to find) and almond/soy milk. I made my husband do the research on soy and he came up with what your doc said too, so I felt OK giving it.     I would take a look on pinterest/google for some breakfast ideas, I am sure you will find many!

  3. Whole Foods has great blueberry waffles! Sully loves a good waffle in the morning. :-) Good luck!

  4. There are tons of recipes out there for baby breakfast muffins. Either with eggs, grain (I know oatmeal is out but have you tried Quinoa?), or fruits/veggies. Check out the site wholesomebabyfood.com. Wealth of info! I know there is a sweet potato muffin that LK loves in the morning. I will try to find it and send to you! Also, I am LI myself and when we introduce milk to LK we are going to do a variety of milks including hemp milk. Great source of protien, good fats and vitams/minerals!
